Squaring the circle – a project of playground for a community centre.
To play means to be free. Freedom (not) to play, to explore, to build or just to be is crucial for the design of the playground. It is a very inclusive place for any activity a child can think of, not a set of equipments. Its message is simple: if you want, you are free to change your surroundings. The ever-changing playground is a metaphore for the utopia this competition aims to achieve, therefore squaring the circle.
Identifying the strong parts of the place and supporting them by simple design is the key principle of our proposal for the rest of the garden – to softly update it by adding a new layer to the existing quality, structures and greenery. Our approach is realistic, low-cost and DIY to support the bottom-up principles. The social horizontality as the opposition to the adjacent verticality. Simplicity and sustainability enable independence.
A true alternative can create its very own world and value system. Isola Pepe Verde has a great potential to follow this ambition, which can be achieved and maintained by humble everyday work and, above all, by keeping the ethos and identity of the community garden.
